A Punokawan Family from Bali

The term “Punokawan” originates from Javanese puppetry, particularly wayang kulit, a traditional Indonesian shadow puppetry. In wayang performances, Punokawan refers to a group of characters typically depicted as clever, witty, and humorous servants or sidekicks.

The most well-known Punokawan characters are Semar, Gareng, Petruk, and Bagong. They serve to provide comic relief, wisdom, and, at times, criticism of those in power during the performances.

The Punokawan characters are cherished in Indonesian culture for their humor and their ability to resonate with the audience. Moreover, they are admired for the deeper symbolic meanings and philosophical messages they convey within the context of Wayang performances.

Once more, I am proud of a great find from a surplus Japanese warehouse in the Philippines.
