I never considered collecting dolls until I found this little lady. Born in 1889, my great-grandma would have loved this doll. Today’s children might be scared of her, but the doll’s looks were state-of-the-art for my great-grandma. Hertwig & Company produced these dolls for the US market from 1888 until 1940. Remarkable is the blue eyes; if these dolls depict Chinese ladies, there is something wrong, but this was probably a big hit among Asian girls. For example, I remember that my mother wished for a black doll. This antique doll is made of porcelain for the head, arms, and legs and filled with cotton and other fabrics for the body and dresses.
